Public Transportation

in this section

Increase dramatically the hours, frequency, and coverage of Athens Transit and develop a regional system by January 2009.

The focus of this initiative is to increase coverage and accessibility of public transportation in Athens and the surrounding region. This initiative will reduce poverty by providing people access to more jobs in the city and region. A regional bus system will also support the development of our regional economy.

Progress Report

The OneAthens Transit Team has developed Local and Regional strategies that will increase routes, outreach, and advocacy to address Athens' transit needs. It includes increasing the frequency of fixed route service to 30 minutes and beginning service at 5am; creating Sunday and Holiday service; increasing the Link to provide county-wide demand-response service so that people who live off the fixed route can still access the bus system; developing marketing and advocacy programs; and coordinating with surrounding counties to create regional service.
